Brushing Your Tongue Is an Important Part of Cleaning Your Smile

Posted .

Your oral health is our top priority here at Char Dental, and we are committed to addressing all of your dental needs in a professional and efficient manner, as well as helping you discover effective ways to care for your smile. It’s important to maintain good health between professional dental cleanings, which you can do by cleaning your tongue as part of your daily oral care.

Many of the oral bacterial acids that build up on your smile like to accumulate on your tongue, especially in the back. Skipping cleaning your tongue every day allows bacteria to result in unwanted conditions such as a fuzzy-feeling tongue, bad breath, a sour taste in the mouth, and changed taste buds.

There is no specific or complex method to cleaning your tongue. Many people prefer to simply scrub their toothbrushes from the back of their tongues to the tip to loosen any bacteria deposits that can then be rinsed away. However, you may find a tongue scraper, which is designed to not trigger your gag reflex, to be more effective. You can find tongue scrapers in the dental aisle of your local store or ask our dentist for a recommendation.

Whichever tongue cleaning tool you find to be right for you, remember to clean it between uses by rinsing with warm water and an antibacterial mouthwash. This reduces the risk of cross contamination.
